Te Awa was established in 1992 by the Lawson family. The vineyard is located in the renowned Gimblett Gravels premium wine growing region of Hawkes Bay. The land had traditionally been used for grazing sheep and growing vegetables.

Te Awa opened their now highly acclaimed restaurant in 1999. Hawke’s bay is regarded as the premier lifestyle region in the country with its diverse food production and wine industries. The Te Awa winery restaurant is an integral part of this culture.
In 2002 Te Awa winery was purchased by Julian Robertson. Dry River winery was purchased at the same time.
2009 saw the arrival of a new winemaking team headed by the widely experienced Ant Mackenzie and ex Dry River Assistant Winemaker Cameron McInnes.
The intention is that Te Awa and Dry River continue to develop their own philosophies within their regions but work together more closely on aspects of viticulture and winemaking into the future.
