To realise our aim a 'no-recipe' approach to winemaking is used, as grapes from specific parts of the vineyard have differing potential. To express their character, individual and often unique handling is required. Each parcel of grapes is fermented separately and constant visual, tactile and tasting assessment throughout the fermentation and maceration are the tools we use when decision-making.
We believe our wines, red and white, to be characterised by purity of fruit and fine structure.
They are distinctive by their fine balance, exuberant, lively, and aromatic nature.

ph:06 879 7602 'All the wines produced here have a style and balance particularly suited to the European or American palate. The most ambitious and accomplished of these is the “Boundary,” a red wine of blended Bordeaux varieties; the 2002 and, especially, the 2001 are outstanding.'
Michel Bettane (France's most respected and prominent wine writer) - Bettane & Desseauve’s The World’s Greatest Wines. 2006
"These are head turning wines of exceptional balance and class".
Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE ANDREW CAILLARD MW, May 2003 Te Awa Wines are the absolute expression of our single estate vineyard. We strive to achieve balanced wines reflecting the grapes from which they are made. In-depth knowledge and understanding of our vineyard has allowed us to identify parcels of vines from selected sites within the vineyard which are lower yielding and produce more intensely flavoured fruit. Often these are small patches of vines within rows rather than a generalised area. We have found these special parts of the vineyard consistently produce fruit with great complexity of flavour and intensity of structure, allowing us to express these characters in elegant, complex, wines with good cellaring potential. The Windmill has played a significant role in the history of Te Awa. Long before the vineyard was established in the mid 1990’s this property was sheep grazing country, like much of the land in this region. However due to the heavy gravel and free draining soils that has made this such ideal land for high quality grape production (Gimblett Gravels) it was very difficult to grow regular feed and hence a windmill was absolutely necessary to provide water for the constant irrigation of the land.
The Windmill is no longer in use, but remains a dominant feature at the entrance to the Te Awa vineyard and is a symbol of importance on all Te Awa wines.
The 'Windmill' range of Merlot/Cabernet and Chardonnay is made from grapes picked from specific, moderate yielding sections of our Single Vineyard.
The wines have purity of flavour, are drinkable in their youth and structured to have 2-3 years cellaring potential.
PURCHASE FROM THE TE AWA RANGE | | Te Awa Sauvignon Blanc 2009 Talc and orange peel overlying a pure tropical melon base. A mysterious wood spirit note peeks through, at warmer temperatures, probably from the Semillon.
The approach on the palate is low key. Weight builds across the palate to the point where you know something serious is happening. There is no real impression of acidity, yet it is definitely there. More so the tannin structure gives the palate form and texture, whilst the ripe fruit provides weight. Balance is achieved through the use of different winemaking techniques, fermentation vessels and fermentation temperatures. Once again the mineral notes typical of the site are apparent; illustrated in this case as a statue like austerity, or perhaps a slight chalky texture on the back palate. | | Te Awa Chardonnay 2007 This is high impact Chardonnay. Ripe stone fruit oozes summer flavour, reminiscent of golden queen peaches, groaning on the tree at the end of summer. Enter the magical effect of well seasoned barrels; almost magnifying the fruit, yet enhancing it at the same time with vanilla and clove spice. A dusting of cinnamon, like a milky cappuccino, completes the effect.
The palate matches the poached fruit opulence of the nose. This wine runs the risk of being top heavy, but it cleverly saves itself. Under-lying structural integrity, from fruit tannin and acidity, ensure a rock solid foundation for the embellishments on top.
Like a magnificent clipper full of sail, loaded with a cargo of produce from tropical climes. Tightly rigged, as it embraces a trade wind, but perfectly balanced as it heads to market. Click here to download Tasting Notes | Add to Cart | Price Per Bottle $30 Price Per Bottle (case lots) $27
| | Te Awa Cabernet Merlot 2007 The nose suggests graphite, lead and mineral; hard things, yet it seems to be withholding something softer. Tightly guarded, like an ancient treasury, stacked to the ceiling with bounty. Silken oak, intoxicating vanilla spice and the ripest black currants are the gentle secrets within.
The palate is twitching and muscular like a prize fighter who will soften, once some of the aggression is punched out. Guarded yet poised, at this youthful stage, and waiting for time to weave its magic, or take its course. There is sweetness here too, a gentle heart hidden.
Shackled and brooding at present, of all the 2007 wines this one will reward cellaring the most. Click here to download Tasting Notes | Add to Cart | Price Per Bottle $30 Price Per Bottle (case lots) $27
| | Te Awa Pinotage 2007 Take a trip on an old boat.
Stoke the boiler. Coke, tar and bitumen fill the air.
Whiffs of bilge, oil and salt are never far away. The fresh layers of paint cover a rusty hulk beneath. Faded grandeur is hard to hide.
Take a seat; the springs are gone and the leather cracked. It swallows you up, like an envelope, horse hair stuffing and old leather, still providing comfort after all these years. The frame remains strong.
Pinotage is our old boat. Click here to download Tasting Notes | Add to Cart | Price Per Bottle $30 Price Per Bottle (case lots) $27
| | Te Awa Zone 10 2006 Primary fruit characters of cassis and raspberry coulis are typically at the fore. Add to this a sinewy / brooding Cabernet note of fag ash and bog. This wonderfully stylish nose speaks volumes of the variety and site.
This litheness follows through to the palate. Not a block buster, in the modern sense, but super powerful in a traditional fashion all the same. The wine still looks structurally sound, built for the longer haul, but after a couple of years in the bottle it is already approachable in a conventional sense. The austere fruit tannins have been tamed and the current impression of plumpness is as close as you get to generosity in a variety that is prized for its adroitness and unapproachable nature.
This wine could be viewed as a one wine master class in the potential of Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon. Click here to download Tasting Notes | Add to Cart | Price Per Bottle $38 Price Per Bottle (case lots) $34.2
| | Te Awa Boundary 2004 An intriguing bouquet showing blackberry, blueberry and plum aromas along with hints of cocoa, exotic spice and warm earthy notes.
The palate is complex and refined bringing together the recognised Merlot hallmarks, red fruits and hints of cocoa, smoke and game, along with Te Awa’s own terroir expression of warm gravely earth notes.

| PURCHASE FROM THE WINDMILL RANGE | | Windmill Chardonnay 2006 Carefully harvested in mid March, the grapes were gently pressed and after cold settling fermented in 90% French and 10 % American oak barrels. The new wine stayed “ sur lies” (with the fermentation lees) in barrel for 8 months during which time the lees were regularly stirred to encourage the silky texture. By using only a small percentage of new oak (5%) and no malo-lactic fermentation, Windmill Chardonnay retains the purity of flavour and vibrancy that is the hallmark of our vineyard. | | Windmill Merlot Cabernet 2006 75% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc bring a fine structure and fragrance to complement the warm texture and fruit complexity of the Merlot. Malbec gives floral and spicy notes adding to the aromatic and flavour complexity.
Windmill Merlot Cabernet 2006 spent 15 months in barrel and was regularly racked to ensure clarification and development of the tannins. Click here to download Tasting Notes | Add to Cart | Price Per Bottle $20 Price Per Bottle (case lots) $18
| PURCHASE FROM THE LEFT FIELD RANGE | | Left Field Chardonnay 2009 Typical Chardonnay notes of white nectarine and fresh citrus show through on the nose. Subtle notes of talc, mineral and flint are in the background.
The main impression on the palate is that of freshness with a hint of flintiness. The purity of the Chardonnay fruit flavor, coupled with sensitive winemaking, has resulted in a medium bodied, well focused wine. This wine is dry, but not austere, which lends itself to the role of thirst quencher /whistle wetter.
An excellent wine to put yourself on the outside of. Click here to download Tasting Notes | Add to Cart | Price Per Bottle $22 Price Per Bottle (case lots) $19.8
| | Left Field Merlot 2007 This is great wine. Wonderfully aromatic notes of old leather, black doris plums and sweet fertile earth. Background notes of sweet vanilla, chocolate and slightly burnt toast add to the effect.
Seldom does a wine live up to its promise on the nose; here is one that does. The impression of plumpness, without being fat, generosity, without being OTT and suaveness without being a greaser all help personify this wine. Easy to like, and easy to drink.
